Farm to photo

Amateur photographers who are California Farm Bureau members or supporters of California Bountiful Foundation can win one of 11 cash awards—including a $1,000 grand prize—in this year's photo contest. But hurry: The deadline is Sept. 30. Enter up to five print or digital photos that showcase farm and ranch subjects, such as fresh or plated food; harvest time; cattle, horses or other animals; rural scenes; and people at work on the farm. There is a separate category with prizes of $250 and $100 for "Budding Artists," ages 13 and under. Click for rules and details.

Cows on the moooove

Raise your hand if you know where chocolate milk comes from. Efrain Valenzuela knows the answer. He has been taking children's questions about all aspects of dairy animals and milk production for nearly two decades. During the school year, Valenzuela and a half-dozen other instructors with the Dairy Council of California roll animal-science and nutrition classrooms onto hundreds of elementary school playgrounds across the state. The goal of the Mobile Dairy Classroom? Build understanding about where milk comes from, how it's processed and how dairy products contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Valenzuela said the kids love petting the calves and have lots of great questions. One of the hardest he's faced: Do cows and bulls get married? Um. . .
