From the editors: Framing a bigger picture

Where there's discussion about farming in California, the conversation invariably includes food. Our state produces a great many items that feed people locally, nationally and globally—and our farms and ranches represent an important contribution.

The impact, however, extends beyond a traditional table to include producing diverse edibles and non-edibles supported by many people and industries. For example, in this issue, painters collaborate with vinters to create artistic wine-label art, a young woman's idea to connect with growers blooms into bicycle delivery of fresh-cut flowers and a U.S. Navy veteran plants seeds to grow educational opportunities for youth.

Every piece is part of a larger picture: one that may start with farmers and ranchers—but then develops and is framed by all that is integral to California's rich bounty.
