Gardening advice to grow from

Advice: "Good planting design does not follow a formula. At best, it allows you to experiment with nature and through nature to make an original statement. As in all of the arts, the best garden designers take risks. Only by taking risks can you come up with something exciting and original." --"Gardening with Nature," James van Sweden (Random House, 1997)

My take: To me, this is permission to break the rules. I've always felt a person should know the rules for whatever it is they are doing, and then it's time to push the envelope, to break the rules, to try something new. Experiment in your garden. Plant what pleases you. But if it doesn't work, don't feel bad about taking it out or changing it.
