Califonia Bountiful

Where the dates are

Travel with us to an oasis in the middle of the desert

At the Oasis Date Gardens, not far off Highway 111, a date shake isn't merely a dessert in the desert. It's a way of life. Located in the heart of the Coachella Valley, where roughly 95 percent of the dates produced in the U.S. originate, Oasis Date Gardens is literally an oasis in the desert.

A subsidiary of California-based Woodspur Farms, Oasis was established in 1912 and has been growing dates ever since. Today, the 175-acre ranch grows a wide variety of interesting and delicious date varieties.

The pollination process is one of the most fascinating parts of growing and harvesting dates. In simple terms, female date trees produce the fruit and the males produce pollen—so the farmer must play matchmaker by hand-pollinating each tree. That ends up yielding about 200 to 300 pounds of fruit per year for a variety of products, including that famous date shake! At Oasis Date Gardens, they even offer several date shake flavors—from chocolate to peanut butter to butterscotch.

In addition to its use in shakes, the ancient fruit is seeing newfound popularity thanks to increased consumption of date syrups and pastes. Both are used as sugar substitutes in baked goods, ice cream, salad dressings, smoothies and more.
