Succulents are not only fun and beautiful, but they're super easy to grow and care for. So says our gardening expert Kristina Lacayo from Green Acres Nursery and Supply, who gave Tracy some easy tips on caring for your new succulent.
As with most plants, the first thing to consider is lighting. Kristina advises that if you're keeping the succulent indoors, the best place is a spot where it will get a lot of light.
"They definitely want full sun," Kristina says.
Although succulents don't need a lot of water, it is important to understand their water needs. One rule of thumb: Water every week in summer, twice a month in spring and fall and once a month during winter. The other key to watering succulents is to have proper draining in your succulent's pot. Having the proper potting soil comes into play here, too.
"Succulents hate to sit in water," Kristina says. "We call that a soggy bottom and they don't like a soggy bottom."
Look for a potting mix that is specifically for cactus and succulents and for coarse, fast-draining mixes in general.
Kristina reminds you to have fun and get creative with your succulents. They help to make your garden unique, so play around and find the ones that best reflect your personality!
