At most fancy dinners, flowers are on the table as decoration. But at a unique dining event in San Diego County, the table was the decoration amongst a field of flowers.

The Flower Fields, a 50-acre hillside ranch known for its colorful rows of ranunculus blooms, recently hosted the unique farm-to-table event to help educate folks about local food and flowers. The four-course "Field to Vase Dinner" was one of several being presented this year at farms across the nation by Certified American Grown, a coalition of U.S. flower farms.

The San Diego event also included a ranch tour by third-generation flower farmer Mike Mellano of Mellano & Co., who talked about growing and harvesting flowers in California. With a Ph.D. in plant pathology and a lifetime of hands-on experience, he is an expert on growing flowers.

Guests also dined on locally grown food from Carlsbad restaurant Bistro West, which catered the meal.
